| On the afternoon of Thursday, July 2, the men of the famous
Texas Brigade,
now under the command of Brig. Gen. Jerome B. Robertson, heard the call
to advance and with the other three brigades of John B. Hood's
Confederate
division stepped off on their mission. It was the hottest day of
the week thus far, the haze in the overcast skies driving the
temperatures
into the low eighties. It was to be, perhaps, their best and
worst
day.
More than a decade after the war, Gen. James Longstreet, the man who commanded both the Confederate attack on the second day and the more famous assault on the third, called the actions of his men on July 2, "The best three hours' fighting ever done by any troops on any battlefield". No regiment in Longstreet's assault fought harder, and certainly none suffered greater casualties, than the 5th Texas Regiment. |
